The fire, that started around 7:56 a.m. Tuesday at 123 Winnikee Ave., in Poughkeepsie, began on the second floor of the building and by the time the fire was out, the entire building had been devasted.
All four apartments were rented to tenants who managed to escape safely without injuries, according to City of Poughkeepsie Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Franco.
Officials said at times the fire was so heavy that flames towered over the building. At one point firefighters had to be pulled out due to the amount of fire, making it unsafe to attack from within.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, Franco said.
The displaced residents were being assisted by the Red Cross.
Arlington and Fairview fire departments assisted at the scene and Roosevelt and Highland fire department covered standby.
One firefighter was injured by a nail through a boot and another received a neck injury, Franco said.
